The sixth gathering on March 24/25 2023 was “Memories of PNG: Four MK’s share their memories from the 1970’s and 1980’s”. Interviewees were Heidi (Schardt) Hollingsworth, Grace (Senff) Payne, David Radke, and Jane (Sandager) Schubert. Their unique stories gave us insights into their lives in PNG and since then, and common themes to explore in our small group discussions.

The fifth gathering on October 1/2 2022 was “Mums’ Stories,” featuring interviews with PNG missionary mums Marion Walck, Loretta Davis, Lynn Hueter who shared memories of their time in PNG. It includes separate interviews with Edna Kuder and Wanda Norden.

The fourth gathering was March 25/26 2022 was “A Visit with Three PNG Pilots”, a delightful time with Jim Lindsay, Howard Schutte and Tim Imbrock.

These ZOOMS have been attended by wantoks from all parts of the globe – Canada, Germany, Australia, France and the US.

Pre-2021 Reunion ZOOM Gatherings

At our third Zoom Gathering on April 16, 2021 about 40 PNG/KLS/SPLC folks participated in a conversation titled “PNG Primary School Conversations: A Trip Down Memory Lane.”  Sam Brandt, Mark Brandt and Mark Singh-Hueter created a slide show introducing the participants. Jonathan Frerichs interviewed the panelists – Gil Kirchhoff, Rita (Jericho) Jahnke, Jim Schulz, Donna (Daechsel) Smallwood, Dan Heist, and Miriam (Senff) Bunn. Click on the button below to view the large group and small group videos. We gathered by age in small groups. Mark Singh-Hueter has added indexes to identify the different group’s discussions.

Our second ZOOM GATHERING on January 23rd 2021 was another enjoyable event spent with 40 family and friends who joined from Germany, France, Australia, Canada and the U.S.A. Enjoy the individual introductions close-up, followed by Ron and Else (Helbig) Schardt’s presentation on “Life After PNG: What’s Your Story?” We all shared some part of our stories in small groups, and Jonathan pulled it all together in a large-group discussion, with closing PNG photos from Theo Helbig. Thanks to Mark Singh-Hueter for hosting, managing, and recording this video gathering.

Quotes from Zoom Gathering participants and viewers

The gathering was expertly organized. I’m grateful for…participation in a meeting like yesterday’s, with people who don’t need explaining, who just know, with “wantoks”. The meeting prompted me to try to go a bit more into other influences that I might have locked away but that still had an effect, probably on my kids, too. Mechthild (Michold) Hammerschmitt-Moehrendorf, Germany

Another excellent meeting your team has put together! A perfect balance of technical knowledge, first class delivery and running of a meeting and overall professionalism. The speakers were so interesting, very honest and covered everything most of you/us felt and still feel I’m sure. There were clear and concise instructions pre-Zoom, and the post-event follow-up has been very good. Impressed! Julie (Hillman) Ross, Australia

Part of what made the event special for me was the Germans who were there. And Ron and Else were such a great choice for the main speakers. I’ve read their books, but they gave us highlights—the big picture. As I have gone to your events over the years, I can see my attitude softening towards some of the harder parts of being in PNG. I have been better able to put my experiences in a broader context. That’s been very positive for me. Catherine Frerichs, U.S.A.

I enjoyed looking at the Zoom Meeting and hearing the discussion. The presentation by Else (Helbig) and Ron Schardt were undoubtedly highlights of the meeting. Of course without the expert guidance of Jonathan the meeting would not have been half as good as it was. I was particularly happy to see pics of Wau. —Rudolf Hertle, Germany

Our October 16th 2020 ZOOM GATHERING was a fun and meaningful event, with 46 registered and a total of 50 participants, including several spouses. It was great to see everyone!  Ruth Van Reken’s presentation on “Third Culture Kids Living in Paradox”, and her thoughtful responses to questions and comments, was well-received. People really enjoyed their small group discussions, and our wontok Jonathan Frerichs proved the perfect facilitator, as we knew he would from past experience.

As promised, here is the video of the Zoom session, thanks to Mark Singh-Hueter, who hosted, managed, and recorded it.

If you would like to view just Ruth’s presentation (rather than the full ZOOM meeting), or forward it to others, here is that link:
